TORITA SOGO, 2002, NEEDLEFISH & CURRENT VASE

Vase in a narrow, waving form, ornamented on the sides with schools of needlefish swimming in currents and bubbles. Of cast and black-patinated bronze with both flush and raised inlay in silver, gold, two colors of shibuichi, and shakudo. Signed on the reverse with a chiseled signature by the artist: Sogo Saku or Made by Sogo, and with an inlaid gold, seal-form signature: Sogo (Torita Sogo, the go or art name of Torita Toshihiro, born 1940). Heisei 14 or 2002.

With the tomobako or original box, inscribed on the exterior of the box: Ryu-do Iro-e Zogan Kaki or Flowing Movement Flower Vase (with) Colored Inlay; and on the reverse of the lid signed: Sogo Saku or Made by Sogo, and sealed: Sogo.

Born in the metalworking center of Takaoka in southern Toyama Prefecture, Torita Sogo studied metal arts under his father, the metal chasing artist Torita Seiji (1908 – 1964). In 1968, he adopted the art name of Sogo. Currently, he is a permanent officer of the Nihon Dento Kogei Shikai (Japan Traditional Art Craft Association), the head of the Takaoka Bronze Traditional Craft Artist Association, and the Vice-President of the Toyama Prefecture Traditional Craft Artist Association. He has received many awards for his work, and in 1961, first participated in the national Nitten exhibition. In 1985, he received the Traditional Craft Grand Prize at the Traditional Craft Production Technique Exhibition. In 1998 and 2001, he received the tokusen or gold prize at the All-Japan Traditional Craft Artist Exhibition. In 2002, he was awarded the Prime Minister Award at the National Traditional Craft Juried Exhibition for this vase.
