Titled: Ryuin or Flowing Rhyme, this painting was created for an exhibition at Hozando Gallery in 1995. The work was painted on an unadorned, early 20th century gold and paper folding screen.

Born in Tokyo, Sugawara Sachiyo graduated from the Tama University of Fine Art in 1989. The following year she had her first solo exhibition at the Kawakami Gallery, and first had a painting accepted into the government-sponsored Nitten art exhibition. In 1992, she was accepted into the Nisshun-ten art exhibition and also showed again at the Nitten. She returned to both venues in 1993, and mounted a solo exhibition at the Wacoal Art Space. In 1994, she entered a painting into the Nitten and participated in a group exhibition at the Kawakami Gallery. In 1995, she had a solo exhibition of folding screens at Hozando Gallery in Tokyo, followed by an extended period of travel to Europe into 1996. In 1997, she mounted an exhibition at Takashimaya titled: Bi no Yokan (Premonitions of Beauty). The next year she again had a solo exhibition of folding screens at Hozando Gallery, and prepared work to show in Ryoyo no Me: Gendai no Kaiga (Eyes from Both East and West: Contemporary Painting), which opened in March 1999. In 2000, the artist had two solo shows, one at Naka Ken Art (where she had more exhibitions in 2003, 2005, and 2006), and the other at Asahi Gallery in Yamanashi. She had another exhibition at Takashimaya in 2001, titled: Shin Seiki wo Hiraku Bi (Beauty with Which to Begin the New Century). In 2002, she had a solo show at Gallery Daisen. In 2004, she mounted two solo exhibitions, one at Zokyudo Gallery and another at Hankyu Department Store in Umeda, Osaka, as well as a preparing for a two-person exhibition with Sugawara Takehiko at Gallery Sakura no Ki (which opened in 2006). In 2007, she held a solo exhibition at Naka Ken Art and another at Takashimaya which was titled: Haru Aki Kororo Ha (Soul and Leaves in Spring and Autumn), beginning in Tokyo and traveling to Yokohama, Osaka and Kyoto.
