NAKAGAWA JOEKI 10TH, INLAID SILVER WATER BUG TRAY

Tray in a circular form, the surface stippled to suggest wind shivered water with three water skeeters. Of hammered and stippled silver, the insects inlaid in gold. Signed on the reverse with a chiseled signature by the artist: Joeki, and with a kao (Nakagawa Joeki 10th, the go or art name of Nakagawa Yojuro, died in 1940 at 61 years of age). Taisho – early Showa era, circa 1920 – 1930.

With the tomobako or original box, inscribed on the reverse of the lid: Joeki Saku, Nanryo Amenbo Zara or Made by Joeki, Silver Water Skeeter Tray, and signed by the tea master in appreciation: Sokuchusai (Sokuchusai, 1901 – 1979, the 13th Iemoto of Omotesenke. He was born the second son of the 12th Iemoto, Saisei. As the eldest son died in 1938, the second son inherited the family title. After World War II he founded Omotesenke Fushin’an Foundation in 1949. He contributed to establishing a modern organizational structure for Omotesenke, which sought to preserve and popularize the tradition of Chanoyu). On the base of the box is inscribed: Amenbo Moyo, Kazari-zara or Water Skeeter Design, Ornamental Tray, and signed: Kazari-shi Joeki or Ornamental Metal Artist Joeki, and sealed.
