MORI GETSUJO, 1925 TEITEN EXHIBITION, PAIR OF BYOBU WITH PET RABBITS IN A GARDEN
Pair of byobu or folding screens in two panels, painted on silk in gofun or powdered clam shell, sumi ink, and mineral pigments with a late spring – early summer garden scene of pet rabbits nibbling vegetables from a low wood box in the right hand screen, and in the left hand screen viewed from another angle while dozing after dinner. Signed on the lower left corner of the left hand screen and on the lower right corner of the right hand screen by the artist: Getsujo, and sealed twice on each screen: Mori Han, and Getsujo (Mori Getsujo, 1887 – 1961). With black lacquer mounts and silver screen hardware. Taisho 14 or 1925.
The fitted storage box for these screens has a panel inscribed by the artist: Yo To Zu, Teikoku Bijutsuin Tokubetsu Chinretsu Sakuhin or Pet Rabbit Paintings, Imperial Art Exhibition Artworks, and signed by the artist: Getsujo Dai or Titled by Getsujo, and sealed: Getsujo.
These screens were painted for exhibition at the sixth Teiten in 1925, and are illustrated in the Nittenshi, volume 7, page 260, number 144.
Mori Getsujo was born in the Harima area of Hyogo Prefecture and studied at the Kyoto City School of Arts. An uchi-deshi or inner disciple of Takeuchi Seiho, he exhibited at twenty-four of the Bunten, Teiten, and Shin-Bunten between 1909 and 1942. After receiving letters of commendation for his Teiten paintings from 1929 through 1934, Getsujo received the right to exhibit his work without review.
