Lacquer artisan’s stand in a rectangular form set on three, short vertical supports. Of wood splashed with black and red lacquers, later polished to reveal a dramatically clouding surface on which to set a piece of flower arrangement or piece or incense burner. Late Edo – early Meiji era, circa 1850 – 1870.

These abstract lacquer artisan’s stands were rediscovered by tea masters during the first decades of the 20th century. Most originated in the Murakami area of Niigata, or in Aizu Wakamatsu in Fukushima.

This example shimmers with movement and vivid contrast. One of the most beautiful we have seen.
