ISHIKAWA SHOUN, GLOBE FLOWER BASKET
Flower arranging basket in a large globe form, woven of wide swirling slats of honey colored bamboo. Signed on the reverse by the artist with an incised signature, Shoun Saku or Made by Shoun (Ishikawa Shoun, 1895 – 1973). Showa Era, circa 1930 – 1940.
Born in Tochigi Prefecture, Ishikawa Shoun studied basketry under Iizuka Rokansai. Rokansai created the prototype for this style of flower basket in about Showa 5 or 1930 (c.f. Showa Bijutsu, Volume 1, page 145), suggesting that this piece by Shoun dates from the decade following. Ishikawa Shoun exhibited at the Teiten prior to the War. One of his baskets was exhibited at the Hoshukuten in 1940, and is illustrated in the Nittenshi, Volume 14, page 265, number 44.
For a similar basket in a smaller scale by Shoun, c.f. Japanese Bamboo Baskets: Masterworks of Form & Texture, number 204.
