IKEGAMI SHUHO, 1930, PAIR OF BYOBU WITH A RIVER IN A ROCKY GORGE
Pair of byobu or folding screens in six panels, painted on washi or Japanese paper in sumi ink with a scene of a river running over rapids in a rocky gorge. Signed by the artist on the upper left corner of the left hand screen following an inscribed poem, Shuho, and sealed twice; again sealed on the lower right corner of the right hand screen with a large formal seal (Ikegami Shuho, the go or art name of Ikegami Kunisaburo, 1874 – 1944). With black lacquered frames. Dated after the poem: Showa Gonen Shinnen, Kanoe Uma Toshi or The Fifth Year of Showa, at New Year in the Year of the Horse, or 1930.
Born in Nagano, Ikegami Shuho studied painting in Tokyo under Araki Kampo. He also studied the literati Nanga tradition. Receiving many prizes for his work, Shuho exhibited frequently at the Bunten from 1908 – 1918, at the Teiten from 1919 – 1933, and at the Shin-Bunten from 1936 – 1943, including the Hoshukuten in 1940.
