Tebako or ornamental cosmetic box in a large size with stylized designs of repeating waves on the sides and two flying fish across the lid. Of kanshitsu or dry lacquer ornamented in raised colored and gold lacquers with raden or inlaid mother-of-pearl, against a finely stippled black ground. With applied silver rims. Showa 10 or 1935.

With the tomobako or original box, inscribed on the exterior of the lid: Nami Tobiuo Te-Bunko or Wave (and) Flying Fish (Design) Stationery-Letter Box; and on the interior base of the box dated: Showa Ju Nen, Rokugatsu or Showa (Era) 10th Year, June and signed with the artist’s studio name: Fuseikai. On the reverse of the box two paper labels read: Hashimoto Sakai (the name of the artist) and Ishikawa Kogyo Gakko or Ishikawa School of Craft and Industry.

Hashimoto Sakai was a Kanazawa artist working during the early Showa era.
