MEIJI-TAISHO
OGAWA EIHO, HAMMERED SILVER VASE WITH PARROT & PLUM TREE
Vase in a broad baluster form ornamented with a design of a parrot in a plum tree, of uchidashi or hammered and chiseled silver with gilt details. Signed by the artist with a chiseled signature on the back, Eiho, and with a chiseled seal, Eiho (Ogawa Eiho, died in 1990 at the age of 94). Showa era, circa 1930 – 1940.
With the tomobako or original box, inscribed on the exterior of the lid: Ginsei Omu Zu Kabin or Silver Vase with Parrot Design; and on the reverse of the lid signed: Eiho, and sealed: Eiho.
A Niigata Prefecture artist noted for his hammering and metal carving, Ogawa Eiho studied under Ito Katsuhide. After the War, Eiho was an exhibitor at the Nitten and served as the president of the Nihon Chokin Kai or Japan Carving Association.
