MURATA YOSHITADA, 1952 NITTEN EXHIBITION, LACQUER TEBAKO WITH DIVING CORMORANT

Tebako or ornamental box in a rectangular coffered form, ornamented with a stylized design of a cormorant diving into water. Executed in togidashi and takamaki-e lacquers, raden or inlaid mother-of-pearl, and the interior in gold and silver nashiji or gold-flake lacquers. Signed on the reverse in raised gold lacquer by the artist: Yoshitada Saku or Made by Yoshitada (Murata Yoshitada, active mid-20th century). Showa 27 or 1952.

With the tomobako or original box, inscribed on the exterior of the lid: U Kazari-bako or Cormorant (Design) Ornamental Box; and on the reverse of the lid dated: Showa Ni-ju Nana Nen Shujitsu or Showa 27th Year (1952), A Day in Autumn and signed: Yoshitada Saku or Made by Yoshitada, and sealed: Yoshitada Saku or Made by Yoshitada.

Murata Yoshitada worked in Tokyo. He first exhibited at the national exhibitions with the 13th Teiten in 1932, later participating in the 14th and 15th Teiten of 1933 and 1934, and in the 6th Shin-Bunten of 1943. After the Pacific War, he showed at the 8th Nitten in 1952.

This piece was made for exhibition at the Nitten in 1952 and is listed in the Nittenshi, volume 17, page 363.
