TRADITIONAL ART

LATE 19th CENTURY, AINU CI-KARKAR-PE ROBE

Ainu robe of ci-karkar-pe type, sewn of hand spun, indigo-dyed, striped cotton cloth, decorated with dark indigo, cotton cloth appliqué, couching in white and scarlet cotton thread, and very broad chain-stitch embroidery. Meiji Era, late 19th century.

This robe is extremely unusual for several reasons: the cotton appliqué employs unusually large sections of cloth, the chain-stitch embroidery is exceptionally broad, and net-like patterns of embroidery fill some areas of the design. For an Ainu head band with similarly complex embroidery, c.f. The Clothes of the Ainu People, page 74, plate 47, lower image.
