CHINESE SCHOLAR’S STONE WITH CLOUDING TEXTURE
Chinese scholar’s table stone on a Japanese rosewood stand in a curling leaf motif. With a Japanese paulownia wood storage box, inscribed on the lid: Reiheki Seki Ippin Unsodo Chinzo, Shuboku Dai Tsuki, and sealed Chikudo, or Spirit Wall Stone, of Unrivaled Rarity, With a Redwood Fitted Stand, and sealed Chikudo, (almost certainly the painter Kishi Chikudo, 1826 – 1897).
A similar type of stone is illustrated in Arts From The Scholar’s Studio, Number 9, page 46. The catalogue Kernels of Energy, Bones of Earth: The Rock in Chinese Art , plate 39 (No. 20), page 72, also illustrates a similar variety of stone.
