MEIJI-TAISHO

YAMAGUCHI SHOUN, BOULDER VASE WITH CRABS

Vase in the form of a small boulder upon which are crawling three crabs. Of cast, cold-chiseled and patinated bronze. Signed on the back with a chiseled signature by the artist: Shoun Saku or Made by Shoun (Yamaguchi Shoun, the go or art name of Yamaguchi Hatsugoro, born September of 1894). Taisho era, circa 1912 – 1926.

With the original box, inscribed on the exterior of the lid: Kani Kabin or Crab Flower Vase, and sealed with two seals, one of which is for the Ginza art shop in Tokyo that originally sold the piece.

Yamaguchi Shoun was a pupil of Kano Seiun, and worked in Tokyo.
