LATE EDO PERIOD, ZELKOVA KURUMADANSU

Kurumadansu or wheeled merchant’s chest in a tall rectangular form set on a heavy horizontal brace, the face configured with two tall sliding panels with horizontal bracing, the sides flat and the back braced. The interior configuration divided vertically at the center, each side with two lower drawers and two open shelves above. The frame, case and sliding panels of keiyaki or zelkova wood, the interior drawers and shelves of kiri or paulownia wood, the wheels banded in iron and the hardware of hand forged iron. With a kijiro lacquer finish. From the Toyama area. Edo period, early 19th century.

An opulent and rare use of materials. The top and frame cut from extraordinarily thick sections of keiyaki assembled with beautiful dovetail joinery.
