TRADITIONAL ART

LATE EDO PERIOD, AINU ATTUSH ROBE

Ainu robe of attush type, sewn of cloth woven from light-brown toned elm bark (ohyo) fibers, with indigo-dyed, two-toned cotton cloth appliqué (both dark and light) decorated with light-indigo and dark-indigo dyed, cotton chain-stitch. The collar of dark-indigo dyed cotton. From Hokkaido. Late Edo – early Meiji era, circa 1840 – 1880.

Note: some areas of repair on back and side.

Unusually, appliqués in both light and dark indigo cotton play elaborately over this robe. A similar use of two-colored chain-stitch lightens the design. The dark tone of the elm fibers woven in the solid ground dramatically highlights the ornamentation.
