SCHOLAR’S STUDIO

CHINESE, 18th CENTURY, BOXWOOD STAND IN THE FORM OF A ROOTED TREE TRUNK

Stand for the display of an incense burner or small bonsai in the form of a curling and rooted base of a tree. Carved of boxwood with a lacquered finish. Chinese, 18th century.

With a Japanese collector’s storage box.

Carved with a beautiful sense of proportion, this ornament for a scholar’s studio reflects a sophisticated appreciation of nature. Burnished by time, a warm, glowing surface completes its sculptural form.
