BAMBOO LOBSTER OKIMONO

Okimono in the form of an ebi or lobster, of natural bamboo. With a storage box bearing an inscription: Ebi Take or Lobster Bamboo and Ten No Tawamure or Heaven’s Jest, signed Tanrei Nanajuni-sai or Tanrei at the Age of 72 (Kano Tanrei, 1857 – 1931). Late Meiji – Taisho era, circa 1890 – 1920.

Kano Tanrei was a respected painter and his appreciation on the lid of the box fits into the tradition of Sencha Tea, and its delight in okimono made from natural materials such as burl wood, bamboo, and stone.
