ANDO JUBEI, MORIAGE CRAB VASE WITH CRABS

Vase with a design of a family of five crabs beneath a band of jaku-kago and rocks, of cloisonné enamels with silver mounts. The crabs executed in moriage relief, the river bank baskets in silver wire, and the rocks in musen or wireless technique. Sealed on the reverse with the Ando mark in silver wire. Taisho Era, circa 1915. With the original rosewood stand bearing the original Ando label on the reverse, and a double storage box. The interior tomobako inscribed: Shippo Seitei Gun Kani Kabin or Perfect River Bank Crab Cloisonné Vase, and signed, Jubei Tsukuru or Made by Jubei (Ando Jubei) and sealed.

The paper label affixed to the base is printed in English: J. Ando, Cloisonné Ware, Nagoya-Tokyo, Japan, and with the Ando mark in red. It is printed in Japanese: Kunaisho Goyotashi or Purveyors to the Imperial Household Agency, and Nagoya Ando Shippoten or Nagoya Ando Cloisonné Company.

The quality and double wood box suggest that this was made as an exhibition or presentation piece.
